Sherrita Duran

A rich colourful voice, with a warmth like her home state of California, a velvety timbre with a notable extension, sensitivity and technique that grant her the ability to be versatile in many different styles ranging from Gospel, Pop, Jazz, Dance, Musical Theater and Opera. It all began with her childhood passion for Broadway musicals opera… After spending her childhood years in Fresno, California, Sherrita decided to move to Los Angeles where she pursued a Bachelors Degree in Music:Vocal-arts focusing on Opera at the University of Southern California. She began her professional singing career at the Performing Arts Center of Los Angeles where she sang at the Los Angeles Opera (Dorothy Chandler Pavilion) in ”Orpheus in the Underworld” and “Hope of the Heart” at the Mark Taper Forum and the Pasadena Performing Arts Center. During this period she also performed in concert tours throughout Europe with the Albert McNeil Jubilee Singers, world renown choir specializing in Gospel and African-American Spirituals. She then moved to Toronto, Canada where she performed in the musical blockbuster “Showboat” at the Ford Performing Arts Center and then kicked off the national American tour of the musical before moving to New York City where she later performed in the Broadway production of  “Showboat” at the Gershwin Theater, directed by legendary director Hal Prince. She continued on Broadway with “Candide”, another musical revival directed by Hal Prince. Other New York highlights include “St. Louis Woman” at NY City Center Encores, and Violetta in La traviata at the Dicapo Opera Theater Young Artists Program. Television appearances include “Good Morning America”, “The Jay Leno Show” and “The Tony Awards” which awards the best Broadway musicals. She has been the recipient of the prestigious Gerda Lissner Foundation award for opera singers and has received awards for her published poetry, including “Poet of the Year 2000” by Talent in Motion Magazine. After many years in New York, Sherrita decided to move to Italy to follow her God-given dreams and where she met her future husband-manager Antonio Puccio and is now happily married. In the brief years that she has been in Italy, she continues to sing professionally styles ranging from Gospel, Pop, Jazz, Dance, Musical theatre and Opera. She has performed in important music festivals ranging from Gospel, Jazz and Blues, such as the “Legnago Gospel Festival” the Varese “Black and Blues” Festival. As a singer-songwriter she won second place in 2005 at the national song competition “Singing 4 Life” with the song “Come Away” (which was written for her husband and sung at their wedding). In 2006 she won first place at “Singing 4 Life” for “Quando tornerai” cowritten with guitarist Majen’ku. She has sung in the various opera houses of Northern Italy such as Teatro Donizetti di Bergamo, Teatro Fraschini di Pavia, Teatro Coccia di Novara as one of the 3 operatic sopranos in the operatic-rock musical “Notorius.” She has collaborated on a variety of dance single covers such as “No One” by Alicia Keys and “I Will Survive” and has recorded dance singles with some of the most noted DJ’s in Italy such as DJ Molella, Paolo Ortelli, DJ Tato and Samuele Sartini. She also collaborated on the hit album of Mondo Marcio 2006 “Dentro la scatola” with the song “Segui la stella”. Television appearances include “Sei un mito” where she energetically imitated Tina Turner, “I raccomandati” where she sang a medley with her friend Carol Alt and the Maurizio Costanzo Show “Tutte le mattine” where she sang the Gershwin classic “Summertime” with the orchestra of Demo Morselli. Sherrita is also a noted voice teacher/vocal coach and is regularly requested for seminars on Gospel and Musical theatre. She has taught at the Conservatory of Pavia/Civic School as the professor of Canto Lirico (operatic song) and the professor of Canto Moderno (modern song). Currently she is the active Vice-Director/Art Show Director of the Nicolini Gospel Choir (with more than 100 elements) of the Conservatory of Piacenza. Sherrita is currently completing her CD as singer/songwriter which will be released this year, featuring songs with a autobiographical nature and that transmit the love of God. The ultimate joy in music is spreading the message of love, healing and joy through Jesus Christ all over the world.
