The repertoire includes pieces that range from swing to Latin music, to rhythm and blues up to the present with particular attention to the musical and compositions by: Glenn Miller, Tommy and Jmmy Dorsey, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Bob Mintzer, Thad Jones, Leonard Bernstein, George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Richard Rodgers, Billy Strayhorn, Mario Pagano, Nino Rota, Piero Piccioni, Armando Trovajoli.

 

Composition of the Orchestra:

5 Saxes, 4 Trumpets, 4 Trombones, 1 Piano/Keyboard, 1 Double-bass, Drums, Female/Male Voice (on demand and in relation to the concert programme)

1 Soloist Conductor.

 

Gianni Oddi

He studied at the Conservatory “N. Paganini” in Genoa and he graduated in Piano under the guidance of M° Alfredo They and in Saxophone at the Conservatory “A. Casella” of L’Aquila with M° Alberto Fusco.

Successful candidate, in 1977 he joined the Orchestra di Musica Leggera of Rai, where he had the opportunity to make important experiences with M° Baldo Maestri.

Versatile instrumentalist and very active both in jazz and classical music.

He has been for years 1° Alto Sax of  the Orchestra di Musica Leggera della Rai in Rome.

He collaborated with artists and conductors including: Gianni Ferrio, Bruno Canfora, Nicola Piovani, Franco Piersanti, Bruno Tommaso, Alfredo Santoloci, Maurizio Giammarco, Claude Bolling, Luis Bacalov, John Lewis, Dizzy Gillespie, Gil Evans, George Russell, Mike Westbrook, Bill Holman, Maria Schneider, Liza Minnelli, Jerry Lewis, Ray Charles, Horacio “El Negro” Hernandez, Bob Brookmayer, Yusef Lateef, George Lewis, Uri Caine, Mike Stern.

In the 70s he cooperated as arranger and soloist sax for RCA Italiana and for all artists of light music of the same record company: Lucio Dalla, Ron, Renato Zero, Riccardo Fogli, Nada, Jmmy Fontana, Mal,  Mia Martini, Claudio Baglioni, Francesco De Gregori, Piero Ciampi.

As soloist performer he collaborated with Francesco Nuti for the realization of the films Io Chiara e lo Scuro e Casablanca Casablanca.

He belonged to the Saxes Machine, an historic saxophones ensemble including Baldo Maestri, Sal Genovese created and conducted by Bruno Biriaco.

He has been playing for many years with “Roma Jazz Ensemble” of Pietro Iodice and Mario Corvini, later with the P.M.J.O. conducted by Maurizio Giammarco and Mario Corvini.

He took part in several Jazz Festivals in Italy and abroad including: Umbria Jazz, Atina Jazz, San Marino, Jazz&Image Villa Celimontana, Latina Jazz, Termoli Jazz, Jazz Jamboree, Scandinavia Tour 1980, Ascona, Radenci, 7° Avrupa Jazz Festivali, Manly Jazz Festival, Ottawa Jazz Festival, Tabarka Jazz Festival, Euro Jazz Festival Tomar, North See Jazz Festival, Nantes Jazz Festival, Buenos Ayres Italian Jazz Festival, Ravello Festival, Roccella Jazz Festival, Talos Jazz Festival, Hessischen Rundfunk, Berliner Philharmonie.

In the classical area he played for Nuova Consonanza, Accademia Filarmonica Romana, Musica d’Oggi, Amit Orchestra, Roma Sinfonietta, Orchestra Sinfonica Regionale del Lazio, Orchestra Sinfonica Regionale del Molise, Orchestra Sinfonica della Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Roma, Orchestra Sinfonica della Rai di Roma.

Under the baton of M° Ennio Morricone he played as soloist at the Teatro Piccolo in Milan, at the National Academy of St Cecilia, I.U.C. (Rome), Verona Arena, Teatro Greco (Taormina), Palais des Congrès in Paris, Royal Albert Hall (London), Auditorium Parco della Musica (Rome), Tokyo International Forum (Tokyo), Osaka Festival Hall (Osaka), Auxerre and Santander Film Festival, Corea Tour (Seoul), Mexico Tour (Mexico City, Monterrey, Guadalajara), Palacio de Congresos  y de la Musica (Bilbao), Auditorium del Cremlino (Moscow), ONU Palace and Radio City (New York), Belfast Festival At Queen’s, Beograd Arena (Serbia), Red Theatre (Shangai Expo), Opera Theatre (Warsaw), International Palace Forum (Tashkent Uzbekistan), Opera Theatre (Wroclaw), Tour Ennio Morricone “ten 2002/2012”, Ireland Tour (Dublin 2013).

In 1991 he founded Ialsax Quartet, saxophone quartet with which he recorded the CD “Contrasti” for Pentaphon and “Mosaic” for Off Limits; this latter project provides for Pietro Iodice participation as Special Guest. He went on numerous tours in: the Netherlands, Tunisia, Turkey, Albania, Lebanon, Egypt, Syria, Africa Tour ’99: (Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Angola, Ethiopia, Kenya), Canada, USA, Australia, Colombia (2003 and 2010), Portugal, Guatemala.

He is founder and Conductor of IALS JAZZ BIG BAND, ensemble composed by 5 sax, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones and rhythmic section for which he curated the arrangements and the musical direction of various Musical including: Tip Tap Show 7°, 8°, 9°, 10° and 14° edition (Teatro Sistina e Teatro Olimpico), “La Dolce Diva” Burlesque Show (Teatro Olimpico), Mario Pagano “Concerto tra Musica e Parole” Manzoni Theatre (Rome), “da Jelly Roll Morton a…… Viaggio nella Storia del Jazz a curated by I.U.C. Great Hall Univ. “La Sapienza” (Rome), Musica Estate “Jazz Concerto a Villa Mondragone” (M. P. Catone), Awards “Le Ali della Vittoria” Eliseo Theatre (Rome).

He was Artistic Director of the Saxophone Festival in Rome (mentored by ENAP-PSMSAD) in the editions: 2006/2007/2008.

He taught Complementary Piano at the Conservatory “L. Refice” in Frosinone, he collaborated as professor of the two-years course of Saxophone at the Music Conservatory of St Cecilia in Rome, and he held seminars and Masterclasses on Saxophone in Italy and for the Italian Cultural Institutes of Amsterdam, Tunisi, Tabarka,  Guatemala City, Bogotá, Cali, Medellin. For several years he has been holding professional and perfection training courses for saxophones at the Centro Nazionale IALS in Rome. He is currently performing concerts in Italy and abroad.
